Tricky Call for Governor

Gov. Chris Gregoire is in a spot. She has to decide whether to sign a bill strongly backed by legislative Democrats and the state's biggest teacher union.

It should be a no-brainer for the Democratic gov – except for one thing: As attorney general in 2000, she filed the lawsuit against the Washington Education Association that the bill is designed to counteract. And the state's current attorney general, Republican Rob McKenna, contends the bill is unconstitutional.

Senate passes HB 2079 to preserve union power

On Friday the Senate passed House Bill 2079. HB 2079 amends a statute that requires unions to get permission from nonmembers before spending their fees on political activity. The U.S. Supreme Court is currently reviewing the constitutionality of this statute in two cases brought by teachers and the state Attorney General against the Washington Education Association.
